Project 424 A, B, C, D, Central Plant Upgrade / Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston, TX Houston Airport System – City of Houston


Project Description: Central Plant and Utility Distribution System Expansion, A multi-prime, multicontract project that expanded the City of Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport’s central plant and utility distribution system spanning a 10-year design & construction schedule with a total budget of over $150 millions. The expansion represented a net distributed capacity increase of 9,000 tons cooling to 23,000 tons and 90,000 MBH heating to 190,000 MBH along with corresponding increases in both electric and gas utility distribution. The project installed various Motor Control Centers, 5kV motor starters, electrical duct banks, cable and conduit for power and control circuits. The project included (2) new synchronous drive chillers, (2) new steam turbine drive chillers, retrofit of (3) existing steam boilers, replacement of (3) existing superheated steam boilers, and associated ancillary pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, etc. The project installed over (2) miles of pre-insulated underground piping and upgrades several miles of existing utility tunnel piping. Noteworthy of this project was an airport wide building controls system upgrade to BACnet compliant systems under multi-vendor contracts.

Services Provided: MADERO’s responsibilities include but were not limited to:

  • Program Management, Engineering Consulting, Field Engineering, Inspections and Testing
  • Geotechnical Testing
  • Developed Structural Assessment Corporate Program Plan, and implementing procedures for Field Inspections, Walkdown and Testing.
  • Stray Current Testing
  • Performed comprehensive Engineering Calculation for assessing the degraded structural conditions of the towers, including recommended corrective actions and determination of structure operability.
  • Metallurgical Testing including determination of actual metal harness and material type.
  • Generatedcomprehensive Root Cause
  • Analysis Report including short and long term recommendations for controlling and monitoring degradations.
  • Chemical & Biological Testing for determining potential corrosion sources.
